In a relationship vs. Being single

In the first picture, I can see a couple holding each other’s hands. They are in a relationship; probably, they are in love. I can imagine that they met at university or work; they went on a date and after a while started seeing each other. They must have a lot of things in common, so they get on well. In my opinion, it’s very important to share the same interests and be on the same wavelength. If people have a different way of thinking, it often leads to arguments and conflicts. However, if you understand and accept one another, problems can be solved much more easily. Personally I think that loyalty, trust and a sense of humour also play a crucial role in a relationship. I believe that my partner should be funny, intelligent and reliable.

Times have changed in the last few decades, and nowadays many couples decide to live together without getting married. I don’t have a problem with it, but it might be the main reason why relationships are not as lasting as they used to be in the past. If a problem arises, couples often choose to split up instead of trying to deal with it.

In the second photo, there is a woman in her 30s. She seems to be rather lonely. Perhaps she doesn’t have a husband or a partner, and she is single. In the 21^st century, being single is a widespread phenomenon in western societies. Many men and women live alone: either it’s more comfortable for them or they simply cannot find a partner. In big cities, this lifestyle is very popular. If you think of the glamorous life of the characters of the famous TV series, Sex and the City, you can understand why. They often go on blind dates or speed dating events. Another well-known example is Bridget Jones, a single woman in her early 30s struggling to find her match. Unfortunately, finding the right one is very difficult for many people, and not as easy as in TV series and novels. As I see it, it’s one of the biggest problems of our society since as our lives are getting busier, many people have fewer and fewer opportunities to find a partner and have a lasting relationship.

Means of transport

In these photos, I can see three different forms of transport: travelling by car, by public transport and by bike. 

Travelling by car has its advantages and disadvantages as well. No doubt it's very convenient to get into your car because you don't have to wait and carry your bags. You can avoid travelling on overcrowded and very often dirty buses or trams. No matter what the weather is like, the car offers us a very comfortable form of transport. However, there are some disadvantages that need to be mentioned. First of all, having a car costs a lot of money since you need to fill it up with petrol regularly and pay for insurance, for example. Secondly, in big cities and town you can often get stuck in traffic jams especially during the rush hours. Parking can cause problems, too. Last but not least, using a car is far from being an environmentally friendly way of travelling. Cars exhaust fumes, so the air becomes polluted, which has a harmful effect on our health in the long run.

The second photo illustrates another means of transport: public transport. It offers a relatively cheap alternative to cars. If you buy a monthly pass, you can travel by buses, trams or trolleys as many times as you want. It isn't worth purchasing tickets, because they are extremely expensive compared with the monthly pass. In my town, public transport is acceptable: the vehicles are not dirty or vandalised, and they run quite frequently. However, they can be overcrowded sometimes, which makes the journey rather unpleasant. Sometimes, I miss the bus, so I need to wait for the next one at the bus stop. Weather conditions also affect public transport. In winter, if it snows and the roads are wet and slippery, buses and trolleys are often late. But on the whole, I'm satisfied with public transport.

Cycling is the most environmentally friendly means of transport of these three since it does not pollute the air. It's a very important factor in heavily populated cities where the increased number of cars and public transport causes serious enviromental problems. (e.g. smog) You don't need to buy petrol or wait in traffic jams. Travelling by bike is beneficial for your health because it helps you to stay fit. On the other hand, it can be rather inconvenient in bad weather. When it rains, you can get soaking wet if you are not prepared for it, so you need to change clothes. Another problem is that your bicycle can get stolen, and it's very likely that the police won't find it.

In general, all means of transport have their positive and negative sides. It's up to you which you prefer. When choosing one, you need take a lot of factors into consideration: costs, convenience, availability and environmental issues.

Living in the city and living in the country

In the first picture, I can see a nice street which is probably situated in the residential district of a large city. There are many advantages of living in a city. First of all, city-dwellers enjoy a wide variety of cultural and entertainment facilities, which means that they can go to the cinema, to the theatre or to art galleries if they feel like going out. It's up to them where they want to go with their friends on a Friday evening: to a restaurant, a pub or a disco. In big cities, the nightlife is usually lively and exciting, so no wonder young people are fond of living in cities. Another advantage of being a city-dweller is that educational, medical and shopping facilities are also great, as a result of which people can have access to these services easily. It is also worth mentioning that in the city more job opportunities are available, and good public transport and the high level of public services also make people's lives easier and more convenient.

However, one must not forget that living in a big city has disadvantages as well. Usually cities are overcrowded, and there is too little green space. People often suffer from too much noise and high levels of stress. Since there are a lot of cars, which exhaust fumes, in many cases the air is heavily polluted. Traffic jams and delays are also frequent during the rush hours, which makes people even more stressed. A lot of cities, especially the capitals can be very dangerous because of the high crime rate. 

The second picture shows some houses in the countyside, which I think is very peaceful. Living in the country, far away from the busy city life has a lot of positive sides. Of course, it is quiet and relaxed, the air is clean and your are closer to nature. People tend to be much friendlier; what's more, communities are stronger, and not as isolated as in big cities. Life in general is a lot cheaper, and the atmosphere is more relaxing.

On the other hand, country life has drawbacks too. There is a world of difference between living in the city and in the country. The country is usually very slow, and nothing much happens there. If you are longing for excitement, it is not the place where you should go. The biggest problem is that there are few facilites, or you need to travel a lot if you you want to access these services. As public transport is poor, it can be quite difficult sometimes if you don't have a car. Employment opportunities are also worse: the wages tend to be lower, and there's a high rate of rural unemployment.

On the whole, city and country life have both advantages and disadvantages too. It is true that living in the country is much more relaxing, but  I prefer urban life because life seems more interesting there, and I can't resist the lure of the big city.

Learning with computers

These photos show how computers and the Internet are used for learning purposes at school and at university. When I was young, students did not have PCs and laptops at home; however, nearly everyone has one nowadays. Using computers has a lot of advantages since it makes learning much easier.

Firstly, you don’t need to go to public libraries because basically you can find everything on the Net. With the help of a search engine (e.g. Google or Bing), you are able to find the necessary information in minutes. This way, students save a lot of time and energy, and for example, they can easily write a literature assignment.

Secondly, in many cases, a CD-ROM is included with the textbook, especially with language books. These CDs contain a lot of interactive exercises making learning more effective and enjoyable. It’s more likely that stundents won’t get bored if the exercises are combined with a lot of images, audios and videos. Learning is becoming more and more interesting owing to the widespread use of computers and the Internet.

At university, one cannot cope without good computer skills because they are expected to hand in their assignments in a Word-document format or send it to the teacher via e-mail. Moreover, they find all the information they need for their studies online: the courses they need to attend  the exam dates and results and things like that. Stundent can also communicate and cooperate with each other without leaving their home as the Internet provides them with plenty of useful possbilities.

However, there are also drawbacks of these technological developments. Since using computers makes stundents’ lives much easier, they are becoming less and less creative as they are used to not having to think too much and work hard if they want to achieve something.

On the whole, one cannot argue with the benefits of using technology at schools. Learning has become more entertaining, and students feel more motivated with these new learning tools. Yet, we mustn’t forget that traditional learning methods also need to play a crucial role in education.

Housework - Who do you think should do it?

In my opinion, it's very important that people living together share housework regularly. There are a lot of household chores to do, for example cleaning the rooms, hoovering the carpets, dusting the furniture, taking out the garbage, doing the washing and the washing up and things like that. Obviously, one cannot be expected to do all these things alone, so family members and couples need to agree how they share the day-to-day duties. In order to avoid future quarrels, it's best to reach an agreement on this matter. 

I also think that men ought to find a way to help women more, and get involved in household chores on a daily basis. It's not only women who are responsible for taking care of domestic duties. Luckily, compared with older generations, nowadays men tend to accept the fact that they need to participate in these things

However, there's one more point that I believe is crucial. Children must learn from a very early age how to help around the house. This way they can avoid becoming spoilt, and learn to be responsible and organized; what's more, this way they appreciate other people's work too.

Family gatherings: Do you like them?

In general, I am fond of large family gatherings mainly because these are the only times when the whole family have the chance to spend some quality time together. Usually we don't have time for each other since everyone has other things to do, for example work or study. In my family, we always get together to celebrate birthdays and holidays, such as Christmas or Easter. On these occasions, we have a delicious lunch or dinner, and then have a chat, talk about funny childhood memories, play cards or watch a good movie together. 

On the other hand, family gatherings have their drawbacks as well. Sometimes I'm too tired or just not in the mood to meet my relatives, and I'd rather spend some time recharging my batteries by relaxing on my own. Moreover, it takes a lot of time and energy to prepare everything. For example, you need to go shopping, clean the house, find out what you're going to cook and so on. No matter how you look forward to meeting your loved ones, by the end of the day you become completely exhausted. Another disadvantage is that you may have family members you don't really like, but these times you have no other choice but to meet them. 

On the whole, family gatherings are great occasions to remember, and escape from your daily routine; however, they also require a lot of preparation that sometimes can be a pain in the neck.

Reading 

I really like these pictures because I'm a great fan of books, and reading in general. I usually spend my free time reading novels or short stories; actually, I'm a real bookworm. One of the reasons why I am so fond of literature is that I quite enjoy using my imagination and reading about interesting people and places. 

No matter if it's science-fiction, romance, fantasy or crime  as long as I find it entertaining and enjoyable. For me reading for pleasure is great fun and a good way to relax and forget about my everyday problems. I couldn't really say that I have a favourite author since there are so many talented writers with unique ideas and stories that it's difficult to choose just one. Sometimes I wish I had more time to read. 

What is more, I  do not only read books but I often find a lot of interesting stuff on the Internet too. Reading forums, blogs and different articles is just as amusing as reading fiction. However, I hardly ever buy newspapers and magazines because most of them are quite expensive and it's much easier to surf on the Internet, and find websites that I'm interested in.

Films

I have always loved watching movies. When I was younger, I used to go to the cinema every weekend with my friends. Now I don't go as often as I used to because cinema tickets have become very expensive, and unfortunately there are fewer and fewer films that are worth watching in the cinema. However, I spend a lot of time watching DVDs , and I also have to admit that sometimes I download films from the Internet.

I really love westerns, comedies and dramas, and I don't mind sci-fi and romantic films. I tend to watch them with subtitles as it's a good way to improve my English too. Before deciding what films to watch, I often look for their trailers on the Internet.

Although the setting, the editing and the soundtrack are very important, I think it's the director and the actors who  can really make a movie interesting for me. My favourite filmmaker is Clint Eastwood: he's not only an extraordinary actor, but also great at finding fantastic stories to tell, stories that are very moving. His works such as Million Dollar Baby, Gran Torino and The Bridges of Madison County are among the best films I have ever seen.

In the first picture, I can see roast chicken with some fresh salad. In my opinion, this meal is good for you because it is not fattening, so it helps you to stay fit and healthy. However, in the second picture, there is a huge burger, some French fries and a big glass of coke. This kind of meal is known as fast food, or junk food as many people often call it. You can buy it in fast food restaurants, which are very popular among young people. In magazines, you can easily read articles about the disadvantages of eating fast food too frequently. They say that consuming too much junk food, such as hamburgers, hot-dogs or pizza, has a harmful effect on your health because they don't contain the necessary vitamins and essential nutrients. Moreover, doctors and nutritionists have proven that there is too much sugar in fast food, so people can easily get sick, and develop serious illnesses like diabetes.

On the other hand, going to fast food restaurant has certain advantages as well. If you don't have much time, it's much more convenient to grab a hamburger in McDonald's. It's also relatively cheap. Trying to eat healthily requires much more money nowadays. If you would like to eliminate fast food, and consume healthy food instead, be prepared because it costs quite a lot of money.

Generally speaking, I prefer having healthy meals, such as chicken, salad, vegetables and fruit. Personally I think, they are delicious and good for my body. It is true that you need more money and time to eat this kind of food, but it's worth it because you are going to feel much fitter and more energetic.
